Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed the possibility of withdrawing Israeli troops from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed, rejecting a proposal supported by the United States that ties military withdrawal to a broader peace agreement. Israeli intelligence assessments suggest that Hamas continues to recruit fighters, rebuild military infrastructure, and rearm. Israel argues that pulling out troops without disarming Hamas completely would enable the group to regain control of Gaza and once again pose security threats.
The US-brokered ceasefire proposal outlines a framework where Hamas would surrender its weapons and dismantle its tunnel network. It also includes a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic administration, the deployment of an international security force, and the reconstruction of Gaza. However, Netanyahu’s firm stance indicates a reluctance to engage in this proposed framework without ensuring Hamas’ complete disarmament.
In the meantime, Israeli airstrikes in recent days have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people, including children. Separately, Palestinians held a mass funeral following the recovery of over 100 bodies from the site of a significant Israeli airstrike in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood in November 2023. Recovery operations are ongoing, with many victims still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
The conflict traces its origins to an attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 251 hostages. This attack set off the current war in Gaza, with both sides experiencing heavy casualties and devastation. The situation remains tense as efforts continue to find a path to peace amid ongoing hostilities and humanitarian concerns.
