During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This pledge includes C$350 million (US$253 million) in support through a US-led initiative to provide Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other defensive assistance, as the country confronts increased Russian missile and drone attacks.
In addition to military support, Canada will offer C$450 million in loan guarantees aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This funding is set to facilitate repairs to damaged facilities, enhance energy storage capacity, and improve electricity supplies to essential services, including hospitals, which are crucial amidst ongoing conflict.
Carney and Zelenskyy have also formalized an agreement to pursue a “hundred-year partnership,” which will encompass cooperation in defense, critical minerals, and energy, among other sectors. This long-term partnership highlights both countries’ commitment to strengthening ties and enhancing strategic collaboration.
Further bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, Canada announced that 30% of its new domestic drone production will be allocated to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy noted that these drones are intended for battlefield use to support Ukrainian forces and ensure civilian protection.
Later this month, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York, possibly during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting could serve as a platform for advancing negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
