Spotify is taking new steps to address the rise of AI-generated music on its platform by implementing measures to identify and limit the reach of these digital artists. Starting in September, Spotify will label AI-created artist profiles and track listings with an “AI persona” tag. This initiative aims to assist listeners in distinguishing between human musicians and AI-generated content, thereby safeguarding the exposure of genuine artists.
In addition to labeling, AI personas will be automatically excluded from personalized recommendations on Spotify. The company believes this approach will help maintain a fair playing field for real musicians who could otherwise lose visibility amid the surge of AI-generated tracks. Artists will have the option to declare if their identities are AI-generated, but Spotify will also employ human reviewers and AI tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas on the platform.
This decision comes in response to the rapid increase in AI-generated music. Spotify has previously reported removing 75 million spam tracks over a year, underscoring the need to address the influx of artificial and low-quality music. The sheer volume of such content poses challenges to music streaming platforms that strive to deliver authentic and high-quality experiences to users.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, transparency about the origins of music is becoming crucial. Spotify recognizes that listeners want to know if the artist behind their favorite track is a real person or an AI construct. By implementing these changes, the platform aims to provide clarity and maintain trust with its audience while adapting to the evolving landscape of music creation.
