New AI Diagnoses Heart Disease in Less Than Two Seconds

An innovative artificial intelligence tool has been developed to swiftly analyze electrocardiograms (ECGs), identifying patients at high risk for heart failure and heart valve disease. This AI system can evaluate routine ECGs in under two seconds, offering a potentially transformative advancement in cardiac care.

Trained with millions of ECG records, the AI is capable of detecting subtle patterns that may escape notice during standard assessments by healthcare professionals. In a substantial trial involving 67,000 U.S. patients, the AI successfully identified up to 81% of individuals suffering from heart failure and pinpointed up to 90% of those with heart valve disease, showcasing its impressive accuracy.

With approximately one billion ECGs conducted globally each year, they are among the most common diagnostic tests. However, confirming heart disease often requires an echocardiogram, a procedure that can result in extended waiting periods. The AI tool aims to streamline this process by helping doctors prioritize high-risk patients for echocardiograms and subsequent evaluations, thus potentially initiating earlier interventions.

Not designed to deliver conclusive diagnoses independently, the AI serves as an aid to flag patients who might benefit from further testing. Researchers are optimistic that, in the future, the technology could also analyze ECGs undertaken for other medical reasons, uncovering previously undetected cardiac issues.

Looking ahead, the research team is investigating the potential for portable, AI-powered ECG devices. Such advancements could revolutionize early detection, making it more rapid and accessible for healthcare providers and patients alike.
