Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has underscored the importance of ensuring artificial intelligence (AI) advancements prioritize human welfare as his government focuses on strengthening AI regulations. During a meeting at Kirribilli House in Sydney on Thursday, Albanese discussed Australia’s AI standards and future regulatory priorities with Father Paolo Benanti, an adviser on artificial intelligence to the Holy See.
The discussions are part of Australia’s broader efforts to establish responsible AI standards that address both social and ethical challenges posed by rapidly evolving technology. Albanese has often referenced Pope Leo XIV’s message, which emphasizes safeguarding human dignity in the era of AI, advocating that technological advancements should serve humanity rather than purely financial interests.
“Humans must remain in control over AI because the stakes are more than economic, they are social and moral,” Albanese stated. He noted that the Catholic Church shares Australia’s perspective that AI should benefit mankind. Father Benanti, who has been advising the Vatican on AI since Pope Francis’ papacy, is in Australia at the invitation of the Italian Embassy and addressed the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday after participating in discussions at the University of Queensland.
These meetings highlight the collaborative efforts between Australia and international experts to develop AI governance frameworks that safeguard human interests. As technology continues to advance, Australia is keen on crafting regulations that ensure AI development aligns with societal values and ethical standards, reinforcing a human-centered approach to technological progress.
