OpenNebula Systems has rolled out OpenNebula 7.4 “Helix,” the latest update to its open-source cloud and virtualization platform, which aims to streamline enterprise cloud management while addressing the increasing demands of AI infrastructure. This new version introduces a completely revamped Sunstone management interface, designed to enhance the experience for cloud administrators with improved speed and intuitiveness. Among the new features are better navigation, resource inspection tools, reorganized settings, and GUI-based management of VirtioFS, all geared towards optimizing everyday cloud operations.
The 7.4 update significantly boosts automation capabilities, featuring OneSwap for bulk VMware migrations, enhanced OneDRS for resource scheduling, intelligent datastore selection, and storage migration improvements. The platform also upgrades OneKS for managed Kubernetes deployments, aiding organizations in modernizing their infrastructure and minimizing operational complexities. Additionally, OpenNebula 7.4 enhances support for AI and high-performance computing workloads with the integration of Axelera AI accelerators, native NVIDIA GPU capabilities within the Slurm appliance, and automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration through NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo).
Networking improvements are also a key component of this release, with the introduction of VLAN Group-level authorization and support for Open vSwitch Switchdev, which together aim to boost performance and ensure secure multi-tenant environments. In terms of backup and data protection, the update strengthens capabilities with the latest version of OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), adds Selected Disk Backups, and offers production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Other enhancements cover areas such as storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and compatibility with VMware.
In conjunction with the platform update, OpenNebula Systems has also launched OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0. This release features updated virtual appliances, supports AArch64 for OneKS, ensures compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and includes deployment enhancements tailored for enterprise cloud environments. According to the company, OpenNebula 7.4 is designed to assist enterprises in simplifying cloud operations, accelerating infrastructure modernization, and supporting the next wave of AI-powered private and sovereign cloud deployments.
