In response to the latest U.S. tariff measures, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to take decisive action to defend Canada’s national interests. During a gathering of provincial and territorial leaders in Charlottetown, Carney emphasized his government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Canadian workers, farmers, businesses, and families amid escalating trade tensions with the United States.
The heightened dispute follows the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of a 50% tariff increase on a selection of Canadian products. This includes specific dairy items, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and other related goods, with the tariffs set to be implemented on August 19. Carney strongly condemned these tariffs, asserting that they breach the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and represent yet another unilateral trade action by Washington.
Carney’s remarks underline the Canadian government’s determination to counteract these measures and protect its economic interests. He criticized the U.S. tariffs as unjustified and in violation of existing trade agreements, signaling a potential intensification of trade tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Despite the challenges posed by these tariffs, Carney confirmed ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute.
