Australia Criticizes China’s Pacific Missile Test, Highlights Regional Security Concerns

Must read

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued a stern rebuke to China following its test launch of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) over the Pacific Ocean. Albanese warned that such actions pose a significant threat to regional peace and stability, emphasizing the need for fewer nuclear weapons rather than more. He vowed that Australia would continue to voice its concerns to Beijing regarding this provocative military activity.

The ICBM test involved a missile launched from a nuclear-powered submarine, equipped with a dummy warhead. Albanese highlighted the potential devastation that could result if the missile were armed with a nuclear payload. During his visit to the Solomon Islands, he described the test as an inflammatory move capable of heightening tensions across the Pacific region.

Joining the criticism, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale called on major powers, including China and the United States, to refrain from conducting missile tests in the Pacific. He urged these nations to focus on building partnerships with Pacific countries rather than creating security threats that could destabilize the area.

China defended its actions, characterizing the missile launch as a routine military exercise conducted in line with international law. Beijing asserted that neighboring countries were informed in advance and that the test was not directed at any specific nation. However, Australian officials dismissed this explanation, arguing that the prior notification was inadequate and did not meet international standards for ballistic missile tests.

The missile test has sparked criticism from multiple countries, raising alarms over increasing military activities in the Indo-Pacific region. There is a growing concern that such developments could intensify regional tensions and usher in a new phase of strategic competition.
