German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited Ottawa for discussions with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, focusing on enhancing cooperation between Canada and the European Union. The visit comes amid ongoing talks about Canada potentially becoming an associate member of the EU.
Wadephul emphasized that the primary goal should be on strengthening practical cooperation rather than dwelling on the specific terminology of Canada’s potential EU association. Both nations share a strong interest in expanding collaboration across critical areas.
Germany has expressed support for deepening ties between Canada and the EU and intends to continue discussions on the proposal. This aligns with Germany’s broader strategy to foster international partnerships.
During the visit, Wadephul and Anand also signed a confidentiality agreement that allows for the exchange of classified information. This agreement is expected to bolster cooperation in defense and security sectors, further cementing the collaborative efforts between the two nations.
